Coronavirus: Colombian cartels execute those who do not respect containment

Colombian cartels recently executed at least 8 civilians who did not respect health measures (curfews, containment …) introduced by traffickers to limit the spread of the Covid in at least 11 of the 32 states of Colombia.

Several armed groups are said to prevent all residents, including some non-Covid patients, from leaving their own region. People suspected of being infected with the coronavirus, on the other hand, are asked to leave, under penalty of being killed. Motorcycles belonging to those opposed to the rules put in place by the cartels have been burned. This information was disclosed in a Human Rights Watch report.

“They cut off transport between villages,” a community representative from Putumayo province told the Guardian. Friday, July 17, a report from the Ministry of Health indicated that the country had crossed the threshold of 6,000 deaths.

“The government should urgently step up its efforts to protect these communities, ensure that they have sufficient food and water and protect their health from the effects of Covid-19,” said José Miguel Vivanco, annoyed. Americas director at Human Rights Watch.
